Proprietary Treatment of Alopecia Areata (AA) at My Hair Clinic

My Hair Clinic is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of medical excellence. For patients living with Alopecia Areata (AA) – a condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks the hair follicle – we offer cutting‑edge, advanced treatment protocols designed to help you regain not just your hair, but your confidence.

AA can be devastating. It may cause loss of scalp hair, body hair, and in severe cases, complete loss of all hair on the body. In some cases it becomes permanent.
That is why we have invested decades of expertise into two unique pathways of care.

Understanding Alopecia Areata

Alopecia Areata (AA) is a chronic autoimmune condition in which the immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles, leading to hair loss. While often underestimated, it’s a complex disorder influenced by genetics, immune function, environmental factors, and lifestyle.

Key Facts About Alopecia Areata

  • ~20% of patients have a family history, indicating a genetic predisposition.
  • Often coexists with other autoimmune conditions, such as, vitiligo, autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto’s/Graves’), atopic conditions (eczema, asthma, hay fever)
  • Spontaneous regrowth occurs in ~50% within 12 months, but may not be permanent.
  • Many patients experience unpredictable cycles of shedding and regrowth.
  • 10% progress to Alopecia Totalis or Alopecia Universalis
  • 25% show nail changes such as pitting, ridging, or thinning – an important diagnostic clue.

Root-Cause Triggers & Contributing Factors

AA is not caused by one single issue. Multiple factors play a role:

  • Immune dysregulation. Overactive immune response targets the hair follicle
  • Breakdown of immune privilege in hair follicles
  • Psychological stress is a frequent trigger or exacerbator of flare-ups
  • High and low cortisol affect immunity and hair growth
  • Emotional trauma may precede flare-ups (telogen effluvium or AA onset)

Environmental & Toxic Triggers

These toxins can interfere with immune regulation, detoxification pathways, and hair follicle signalling:

  • Heavy metals (mercury, lead, arsenic)
  • Pesticides and herbicides
  • Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (e.g., BPA, phthalates, parabens)
  • Mold toxins (mycotoxins)

Gut-Immune System Connection

  • Leaky gut (increased intestinal permeability) allows foreign antigens into the blood circulation, triggering an immune response
  • Gut dysbiosis and low microbial diversity can increase autoimmune risk

Nutrient Deficiencies

Many individuals with AA show suboptimal levels of:

  • Vitamin D – critical for immune modulation and hair cycling
  • Zinc – essential for immune balance, hair structure, and antioxidant protection
  • Iron – needed for follicle oxygenation and cell turnover
  • Selenium, biotin, B12, folate – vital cofactors for methylation, energy, and detox pathways

These deficiencies can impair follicle recovery and exacerbate immune dysfunction.

Dr Hussain’s approach to Alopecia Areata at My Hair Clinic

Functional Medicine Root‑Cause Approach and Symptomatic Relief

Since 2022, Dr. Hussain has taken Alopecia Areata treatment to the next level with a combination of

  • Functional Medicine Approach addressing the root cause of the condition
  • Advanced Medical Hair Restoration giving symptomatic relief and regrowing the hair

Through detailed history taking and advanced testing, we work to uncover why the immune system is attacking the hair follicle in the first place.

Addressing the root causes can not only encourage hair regrowth, but may also improve related autoimmune issues such as vitiligo, thyroid disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and systemic inflammation.

Results often appear within 3–6 months and can be truly transformative.

For many patients, combining both protocols provides the best of both worlds – immediate support for hair regrowth while simultaneously correcting the underlying dysfunction.

Functional testing

Extensive testing to understand what caused you to develop alopecia areata. These tests may include:

  • Nutrient levels and toxins
  • Hormones
  • Gut health and the gut microbiome
  • Tests for oxidative stress, inflammation, catabolic physiology and insulin resistance

Advanced Medical Hair Restoration

Introduced by Dr. Hussain in 2018, this innovative protocol combines epigenetic therapy with microneedling and established hair restoration techniques.Up to two‑thirds of our patients respond to this approach, often removing their hairpiece and revealing their own regrown hair with pride.

This is a symptomatic treatment – we are not treating the underlying autoimmune trigger, but we are helping hair to return.

I absolutely recommend Dr Hussain. He’s the man who knows his job.

His homework is good. His knows his stuff very very well.
